Bryan Reynolds is on a mission to refine his swing and boost his performance, and he's not holding back. This Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder is determined to leave his struggles of the past season behind and is taking a deep dive into his technique.
Reynolds, known for his quiet demeanor, is focused on making adjustments to his swing mechanics. He's identified an issue with his hand placement, which was causing his bat to be late to the ball, resulting in a poor showing against breaking and off-speed pitches.
"I saw the videos and thought, 'Yikes, that's not good!' So, I studied some of my past home runs and tried to replicate that feeling," Reynolds explained.
To address this, Reynolds has narrowed his stance and is working on letting his hands drop naturally, creating a steeper swing path. He's also been tracking pitches against top-tier pitchers like Paul Skenes, the National League Cy Young winner, to improve his timing.
But here's where it gets controversial... Reynolds' defensive position could also be up for a change. After starting most games in right field last season, he might be moving back to left field to accommodate the newly acquired Ryan O'Hearn.
"I'm ready to hop and react wherever they put me," Reynolds said, referring to a defensive technique he adopted last season, inspired by former Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia.
And this is the part most people miss... The Pirates are not just relying on Reynolds to carry the team. They've surrounded him with power-hitting teammates like Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn, and Marcell Ozuna.
"Having that protection, that confidence in your teammates, is key," said Pirates manager Don Kelly.
