BC Transit is introducing contactless fare payment, allowing riders to board buses with a simple tap of their credit, debit, or mobile wallet. This shift towards digital payments is a significant step towards a more seamless and user-friendly transit experience.
Erinn Pinkerton, President and CEO of BC Transit, emphasizes the convenience and flexibility this new system offers:
"We’re making transit easier to use by introducing contactless payment, allowing you to pay your fare with a simple tap. It’s the same tap-to-pay experience many people already use every day, with your credit card, debit card or mobile wallet."
Breaking Barriers, Expanding Access
The primary goal of this initiative is to eliminate payment barriers and make public transit more accessible. By streamlining the payment process, BC Transit aims to encourage more people to use public transportation, potentially reducing traffic congestion and promoting a greener environment.
A Smooth Transition
Contactless taps will be charged at the same rate as cash or the existing Umo system, ensuring a fair and cost-effective transition. Riders will also retain their existing fare benefits, including transfers and capped daily fares.
BC Transit advises that concession fare holders should continue using the Umo app or reloadable Umo card for their discounted fares.
A Costly Endeavor
The Electronic Fare Collection System Project, a joint federal and provincial government initiative, invested $24.8 million to make this transformation possible. This investment highlights the commitment to modernizing public transit infrastructure in British Columbia.
