Bluey's Historic Dub: First Australian Indigenous Language Version (2026)

The beloved children's show Bluey is set to take on a new cultural significance as it becomes the first globally popular animated series to be dubbed into an Australian Indigenous language. Five episodes from seasons one and two of Bluey will be re-voiced in Yolŋu Matha, the language of North-east Arnhem Land, for National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (Naidoc) Week. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Bluey creators Ludo Studio, the ABC, and local organizations, aims to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Australia's First Nations people. The re-voiced episodes, featuring local children as the voices of Bluey and Bingo, will be broadcast and streamed for the first time on Sunday, July 5th. This marks a significant step in the recognition and celebration of Indigenous languages, which have been spoken on this continent for thousands of generations. The project's impact extends beyond language preservation; it brings the stories of Bluey and his family to a wider audience, fostering a deeper connection to Australia's diverse cultural tapestry. The show's popularity, with over 140 countries streaming it and topping US charts, makes this initiative all the more impactful. As the world continues to embrace Bluey's charm, this new language version opens up exciting possibilities for cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. The Indigenous language episodes will also be screened at the Garma festival in August, further extending the project's reach and impact. This initiative is a testament to the power of media in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of language in shaping our sense of identity and community.
