A shocking revelation has emerged as federal inspectors board the Carnival cruise ship in Darwin, following whistleblower allegations of crew skin disease, unsafe drinking water, and forced labor. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has launched an investigation, but Carnival Cruise Line has dismissed the move as a membership drive by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA).
The MUA claims that crew members have come forward with reports of unsafe conditions, and the union is working with International Transport Workers Federation inspectors and AMSA to address these issues. Carnival, however, has denied any wrongdoing, stating that it has nothing to hide and will cooperate with the investigation.
The controversy centers around the Carnival Encounter, one of three Carnival Cruise Line vessels home-ported in Australia. The union alleges that the operator is exploiting loopholes in maritime laws to employ foreign crew members who are excluded from Australia's employment laws. This has led to cramped living conditions, poor-quality drinking water, and crew members being forced to work while sick.
The MUA's Assistant National Secretary, Jamie Newlyn, highlights the systemic problems across the cruise industry, where workers from some of the world's poorest nations form the backbone of operations. While guests enjoy amenities onboard, workers are often housed below decks in overcrowded cabins, provided with inadequate amenities, and required to work while sick.
The union welcomes AMSA's intervention but emphasizes that inspections alone will not address the underlying power imbalance onboard these vessels. The MUA is calling for Carnival Cruises to recognize the right of crew members to organize and bargain collectively, in line with international labor standards. The fight for workers' rights and safe working conditions continues, with the MUA determined to escalate the struggle until lasting improvements are made.
