In a dramatic turn of events, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg found himself sidelined during Wednesday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets due to a sprained ankle. Averaging an impressive 19.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, the No. 1 overall pick had been making significant contributions to the team.
The incident unfolded with just 6:01 remaining in the second quarter when Flagg was defending Peyton Watson. In a challenging moment, he sprained his left ankle as he fell to the ground after being called for a foul. Although he limped to the bench and briefly returned for the final 2:35 of the half, he did not emerge from the locker room for the second half, leading to the announcement that he would be unable to continue playing.
This injury isn’t the first setback for the young player; just two nights prior, Flagg had also hurt the same ankle but managed to tape it up and subsequently led his team to a noteworthy 113-105 victory over the Brooklyn Nets with a stellar 27-point performance.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd commented on the situation, stating, "He stepped on someone’s foot. Last game, he twisted his ankle, too. We decided to hold him (out) for the second half." As for the possibility of Flagg or center Daniel Gafford playing in the next game against Utah, Kidd mentioned that he was uncertain. Gafford had also sustained a right ankle sprain during the match against Denver and had been dealing with this issue for much of the season.
At just 19 years old, Flagg was participating in his 40th game, which is three more than his total appearances during his standout season at Duke, where he led the Blue Devils to the Final Four and earned recognition as The Associated Press men's player of the year. Remarkably, during his first 41 games with the Mavericks, he missed only one due to illness, showcasing his resilience.
Competing for the Kia Rookie of the Year title, Flagg has maintained averages of 18.8 points and 6.3 rebounds this season. Meanwhile, the Mavericks were already struggling with injuries prior to Gafford’s exit, missing their top two frontcourt players—10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, who is expected to be out for approximately six weeks due to ligament damage in his left hand, and young center Dereck Lively II, who is out for the entire season following foot surgery.
"This is a hard time for us," Kidd remarked, reflecting on the challenges faced by the team. "We have had a lot of injuries. … We have been hurt since day one of training camp. This is the norm. The character has been displayed in tough times of being down. But we keep fighting."
