The very fabric of our nation is being threatened, and a legendary activist is sounding the alarm: 'Enough is enough!'
Two-time Academy Award winner Jane Fonda recently appeared on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," where she delivered a powerful message about the urgent need for collective action against the current administration. Her central warning? "Lines are being crossed."
Fonda didn't mince words, referencing a disturbing incident where an ICE agent shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. "They are shooting people," she stated, emphasizing that the issues at hand transcend political divides. "All kinds of really, really bad things are happening, and it’s not a question of Right or Left. I don’t care what party you belong to. It’s a question of right or wrong." The actress and renowned activist cautioned viewers that the United States has never before witnessed a presidential administration quite like this one.
"Authoritarianism has made its way into every single nook and cranny of our government," Fonda explained. She reiterated her concern that "lines are being crossed, and it’s enough. We’ve had enough." She passionately reminded the audience of America's identity as the "Land of the Brave," highlighting the sacrifices made by those who fought and died for the freedoms they now cherish. "We can’t allow them to be taken away from us because, if we let them go, they won’t be there later when we need them back." She firmly stated, "We pay their salaries. We should be in charge." The path forward, according to Fonda, lies in unity: "We have to not be alone. We have to work with other people in solidarity. We have to build community."
But here's where it gets controversial: Fonda's advocacy is deeply rooted in her history. She was promoting the Committee for the First Amendment, an organization she helped revive. This group was originally formed in the 1940s by prominent Hollywood figures, including her father, Henry Fonda, to counter the actions of Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee. "They hunted down people that they suspected were anti-American," Fonda recalled.
She elaborated on the tactics employed by such committees: "Of course, they always start with the universities, the educational system and artists, because we get into people’s heads. We can affect how people think. We can model courage. They didn’t like that." The consequences for those targeted were severe: "So they put people in prison and destroyed careers." The Committee for the First Amendment has seen significant growth since its relaunch, now boasting 3,000 members.
And this is the part most people miss: Fonda views the government as a structure reliant on pillars of support. "Any government is held up by pillars of support. The government or the regime is only as strong as the pillars of support. We want to remove the entertainment committee as a pillar of support," she declared. Her vision is to "show that we really are the Land of the Free." She expressed confidence in the power of the people, stating, "We are the majority. Tyrants are never as strong as we think they are, and people are way stronger than we think they are. Our power as people can make a difference."
Fonda’s call to action is direct and urgent: "You have churches. You have garden clubs. Whatever groups that you are part of, help them get organized." She implores people to prepare: "Help them learn in advance what to do when they come for you — and they will, believe me. Unless we stop this. Enough is enough. We have to get organized."
