A new trash law is set to cost homeowners an extra $30 for waste disposal, but officials have a solution that may not be so simple. The Mocassin Mike landfill in Superior, Wisconsin, which serves parts of eastern Minnesota, is closing due to state law and reaching capacity. This closure will impact Duluth, Carlton, Lake, and Cook counties in Minnesota, as their trash will now be transported to the city of Virginia, leading to increased costs for some residents. The price hike is estimated to be around $30 annually for a 32-gallon can, the most common size in the area. However, this change has left homeowners confused and concerned, as they are unsure how to adjust their trash disposal habits. Steve Pellinen, senior planner of environmental services for St. Louis County, suggests getting a smaller can, having trash picked up less often, and recycling more to cut costs. But these options may not be feasible for everyone, and some homeowners are worried about the additional transportation costs and unclear communication from their garbage disposal companies. The Virginia landfill is also set to expand by 42 acres, which will allow it to operate for 50 to 70 years with the extra trash disposal. Despite this, the cost changes have already gone into effect, and the Virginia landfill is expected to be fully operational in the summer. It's important to note that there are special disposal methods for certain items, such as car batteries, motor oil, hazardous materials, used tires, and computers and electronics, and failure to follow these guidelines can result in hefty fines. So, while the new trash law may be causing some frustration, it's crucial to understand the proper disposal methods to avoid any legal issues and keep our communities clean.
