Bold headline: Social Security payments drop this Wednesday, and here’s who will receive them
But here’s where it gets controversial: large groups are paid on different days, and a sizable portion still wonders when their checks arrive each month.
Overview
Next Wednesday, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue benefits to millions of recipients nationwide as part of its December distribution schedule. This marks the fourth payment run for December.
Who gets paid on Wednesday, Dec. 17?
On December 17, payments will be issued to recipients of retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and survivor benefits. Of the roughly 70.4 million Americans who receive retirement, SSDI, or survivor benefits, most are paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month. The exact Wednesday a beneficiary is paid depends on the birth date of the worker whose Social Security taxes fund the entitlement.
Since December’s distribution falls on the third Wednesday, the December 17 payment run covers birthdates from the 11th through the 20th of each month.
December payment schedule by birth date (for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesdays)
- Born 1st–10th: Wednesday, Dec. 10
- Born 11th–20th: Wednesday, Dec. 17
- Born 21st–31st: Wednesday, Dec. 24
Who isn’t paid on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday in December?
- Long-term Social Security recipients who started benefits before May 1997 typically receive checks on the third day of each month, regardless of birth date. Thus, December payments for these individuals were scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 3.
- SSI recipients (Supplemental Security Income), a separate SSA program for low-income seniors or disabled individuals, are normally paid on the first day of each month. Accordingly, December SSI payments were due on Monday, Dec. 1.
- Dual beneficiaries (those receiving both SSI and a Social Security benefit) often receive SSI on Dec. 1 and the SSA payment on Dec. 3.
Quick reference for December payments not tied to a birthday schedule:
- SSI beneficiaries: Monday, Dec. 1
- Pre-May ’97 Social Security recipients: Wednesday, Dec. 3
- Dual beneficiaries: SSI on Mon., Dec. 1; Social Security on Wed., Dec. 3

What is the typical monthly payout for retirement beneficiaries?
The majority of SSA beneficiaries are retirees, and they receive an average monthly benefit of about $2,013.32. The current maximum monthly retirement benefit is $5,108.00.
Disability, survivor, and SSI benefit levels
- Disabled workers: average about $1,588.52 per month
- Survivor benefits: average about $1,576.20 per month
- SSI beneficiaries: average about $717.90 per month
Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026
In October, the SSA announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026. For retirees, this translates to an average monthly increase of roughly $56.
First recipients of the new payments
SSI beneficiaries will be among the first to receive the higher payments in January, with their January funds issued on December 31 due to New Year’s Day holiday observance.
Payment methods
The SSA notes that paper checks are largely phased out. Most recipients are now paid electronically via either:
- Direct deposit to a bank account, which can be updated through the My Social Security portal
- Direct Express Card, a debit card for those without bank accounts
